Check it Out in
May...Red
Sox Nation!
Can’t get
enough of the local team? Not enough details in the sports
pages? Check out these baseball books:
Tony Massaroti:
Dynasty: the Inside Story of How the Red Sox Became a
Baseball Powerhouse.
Sports Illustrated says “Tony Massarotti provides an
insider’s look at Boston’s rise from cursed to first,
providing a must-have book for the true Red Sox fan’s
library”.
Popular third baseman Mike Lowell’s new book,
Deep Drive: a Long Journey to Finding the Champion Within
looks at his life on and off the field. Like last year’s
Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits by David
Ortiz, the book is inspiring look at a charismatic man.
Boston Globe columnist Michael Holley had exceptional access
to the Red Sox staff and clubhouse. The result is
Red Sox Rule: Terry Francona and Boston’s Rise to Dominance.
Jose Canseco (Juiced)
names names in
Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars and the Battle to Save
Baseball. Roger Clemens: did he or didn’t he?
Get a Life
of Fame...or Read About One!
Can’t get away for a “Girls Night Out”? Check out new and
entertaining memoirs by some very popular women:
Barbara Walters’ new book,
Audition: a Memoir has been in the news over the past
week or so for some surprising revelations about her
personal life. Beyond her affair with a Massachusetts’
senator, there is a life full of struggles and
accomplishments. Love her or hate her, Walters’ book
“heartbreaking and honest, surprising and fun, sometimes
startling, and always fascinating” (book jacket)
Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly
Simon-and the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller.
Reviewer Carole Radziwell said “Girls Like Us is about three
women whose courageous, defiant talent defined a generation.
Whether you read it to rediscover that wonderfully stormy
time -- the '60s and early feminist movement -- or to
discover it for the first time, take it to heart. Sacrifice,
hard work, and daring to dream is still the tale of girls
like us."
On another musical note:
Home: a Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews is a
look at the star’s early life from her birth in 1935 until
her starring role in Disney’s “Mary Poppins”. The book
includes more than fifty photographs from her personal
collection and she leaves the door open for a sequel.
Think of Helen Mirren’s memoir as a picture book for adults.
In the Frame: My Life in Words and Pictures is a telling
“look” at the actress’s life in words and pictures. She says
she chose this format because: “When I read an
autobiography, I am always drawn to the pictures. To me, it
is what lies behind a photograph that makes it interesting.
As you read and discover more about the personalities
involved, the photos become more telling.”
Finally, two of the popular cooks from Food TV have written
about their lives instead of their recipes.
Paula Deen: It Ain’t All About the Cookin’ and Sandra
Lee’s biography,
Made from Scratch reveal each of the Food Network’s
stars’ personal journeys from modest beginnings to their
successful lives today.
