Martha Dana
If you participated in the library’s summer programs in the 80’s and 90’s, chances are you attended a presentation by Martha Dana and her puppets. Martha was a gifted story teller and artist, designing and hand crafting all of her larger than life characters and puppets. After her retirement, she continued to make large whimsical wall sculptures from recycled materials. In her artist statement for her show here at the library in 2016 “Re-Artistry: The Art of Recycling” she said “(I) continue to enjoy making characters who’s quirky images remind us all of our own secret pleasures, typical avoidances, fears and fantastic dreams”.
Martha passed away in October but left behind legacy of art, artistry and storytelling. Two pieces of Martha’s are displayed in the children’s room: “The Book Thief Dragon” and a wall sculpture assemblage of wild animals. They remind us to hold on to our sense of wonder and whimsy and to remember as Martha said, “People who have fun live longer.”
